History and Development of Blues Music

The term blues officially used in 1910. Blues is a flow of vocal music and instrumental originating from the United States (US). The blues name is born from the blue term connoted with feeling frustrated and melancholy. The blues music departs from the spiritual and praise music that emerged from the community of former African slaves in the US. And began to grow rapidly in the 19th century AD the US.

According to the authors, scientists and researchers at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York, Sylviane Diouf, Blues has a relationship with the Muslim community tradition in West Africa. To prove the link between American Blues music and Muslim traditions, Diouf plays two recordings. The first one he presented to the public who was present in a room of Harvard University was the call to prayer (call for Muslims to perform the prayer service). After that, Diouf turned Levee Camp Holler.

The second record is an old Blues song that first appeared in the Mississippi Delta about 100 years ago. Levee Camp Holler is not a fairly regular blues song. The song was created by the black Muslim community of West African origin who worked in post-Civil War America. Levee Camp Holler’s lyrics emphasize words that sounded vibrating. According Diouf, the nasal style between the songBlues Levee Cam Holler-like adzan is also evidence of a link between the two.

Professor of Ethnomusicology from the University of Mainz, Germany, named Prof. Gehard Kubik also wrote a book about Blues music relations with Islamic civilization in West Africa titled Africa and the Blues, published by University Press of Mississippi in 1999. Cubic prove has proved it. “The vocal style of most Blues singers uses melisma, wavy intonation. Such vocal style is a relic of the West African community that has been in contact with the Islamic world since the 7th and 8th centuries, “he said. Melisma uses many tones in a syllable.

Trick playing Funk music
Learning variations of the sixteenth and triplet notes, then learning ghost note strumming, I’m not a funk player but as far as I’m concerned about funk hal2 above pretty good essence in funk. For chords that used funk music most are dominant chord2, can dominant 7th, or 9th dominant. etc. Progress. It’s often funk that one chord progression is fixed in one chord, but there are also some variations, but usually not too complicated. Funk is more to rhythmic and groove, and a clear ghost note is very essential in funk music. For sound, funk more often use sound clean or light overdrive. To flatten the strumming volume you can also add compressor effect. For refrensi band try listening james brown, or tower of power, or band2 called ama vorpobello.

About Hip-Hop, A Music and Cultural Flow

The point is, “Hip-Hop is something we live, Rap is something we do”. Or it can be said that Hip-Hop is a culture or culture, while Rap is a job. Thus, the word came from “rapper”, no word “hip-hopper” or “pe-hip-hop”. To know and deeper appreciation of Rap Music, of course we must know more about Hip-Hop Culture itself. It would be better if we start by getting to know the history of Hip-Hop culture.

Hip-Hop culture itself has existed since the 70s in the United States. At that time, DJ from Jamaica, namely DJ Kool Herc who held a block party event in some housing every night. It is intended to eliminate fatigue after the move, where the DJ is playing jazz, soul or funk songs. This Hip-Hop culture has started to lead as a movement when a student named Kevin Donovan was commissioned by the United Nations to leave for Africa. There, Kevin studied the meaning of unity of the Zulu chief. It also encouraged him to form a movement called Universal Zulu Nation.

Gradually, Hip-Hop culture is not only a culture, but a movement of consciousness. More hip-hop activists are emerging from various elements, be it rapper, beatboxer, DJ, breakdancer, adan also other lovers. But still in America, there is still a commotion between certain races or groups. This also prompted the hip-hop activists to form a declaration that would become one of the “scriptures” for today’s hip-hop actors. The declaration signed by hip-hop activists and witnessed by UN and UNESCO delegates is called “Hip-Hop Declaration Of Peace”.

This declaration has 18 points, and from those points, I will take the most important points (which I concise):
1. Hip-Hop is a medium of expression, and can be done by being a rapper / MC, can with breakdance, can be a DJ or beatboxer, and can also donate other works, such as writing for knowledge, clothes / fashion, And entrepreneurship related to the streets (Point 1).

2. Hip Hop is respecting human dignity, without discrimination, or essentially protecting the development of human life, such as respecting the prevailing laws or customs, respecting institutions, and abstaining from violence (Points 2, 3, 12, 13) .

3. Hip-Hop appreciates the nature in which we live, our own Earth (Points 14, 15).

4. Hip-Hop should also have a message to know yourself and provide a good education, and also teach about respect (Points 5 and 17).

5. No one can express himself as a “pioneer” or “legend” hip-hop other than he has contributed and given credibility. (Point 16).

6. Hip-Hop is not seen from the color of skin, tribe, country, religion, work, culture or language. Because, hip-hop is a culture that teaches collective consciousness (Points 10 and 11).

If we return to Rap Music, of course as part of Hip-Hop culture, of course Rap music must adjust the above points. This means that Rap music appreciates human dignity, has a message to know oneself, respect institutions, and no one can make himself as number one if it has not contributed and credibiltas, and can be done by all circles, without any particular group. So, from the declaration, it can be concluded that essentially, Rap Music must indeed be educative, with messages that can be captured by everyone, and can be delivered in their own way. In addition, the music Rap emang must be able to touch all the peoples in the community, because this music is also inspired from the life of the street that emphasizes the struggle of life.

History of Jazz music

Jazz is a type of music that grows from the incorporation of blues, ragtime, and European music, especially band music. Some of the jazz subgenres are Dixieland, swing, bebop, hard bop, cool jazz, free jazz, jazz fusion, smooth jazz, and CafJazz.Jazz is a music stream originating in the United States in the early 20th century with roots of African music And Europe.Music jazz using many instruments of guitar, trombone, piano, trumpet, and saxophone. Some rhythms in jazz have been associated with brothels and women with poor reputations. In the journey then, jazz eventually became a form of music art, both in certain composition and improvisation, which reflects the melodies spontaneously. Jazz musicians usually express their feelings that are not easily explained, because this music must be felt in the heart. “If you ask, you’ll never know” according to Louis Armstrong.

The jazz legend began in New Orleans and flourished into the Mississippi River, Memphis, St. Louis, and finally Chicago. Of course jazz is influenced by music in New Orleans, tribal drums of Africa and the structure of European music. The background of jazz can not be separated from the fact that jazz is influenced by various music such as spiritual music, cakewalks, ragtime and blues. One jazz legend is believed that around 1891, the owner of a hairstyle in New Orleans named Buddy Bolden blew his cornet and it was then that jazz music began as a new breakthrough in the music world. Half a century later, jazz music in America contributed a lot to the world of music, studied at university, and eventually became a serious and calculated musical flow.

Jazz music as a popular art began to spread to almost all American societies in the 1920s (known as Jazz Age). Jazz was rife in the swing era in the late 1930s, and reached its peak in the late 1950s as a modern jazz. In the early 20s and 30s, “jazz” has become a commonly known word.
The influence and development of blues music can not be abandoned when discussing jazz music in the early years of its development. The expression that radiates when playing the blues music fits perfectly with the style of jazz music. The ability to play blues music becomes standard for all jazz musicians, especially for use in improvisation and hourly sessions. Blues own music, which comes from the South, has a very wide history. Blues musicians usually use guitars, pianos, harmonica, or play together in groups that play homemade musical instruments.

Dixieland and Ragtime Era

Ragtime is unique because it does not include improvisation and blues. This is an influence of the jazz origin form, lasting for about the first 15 years of the 20th century. Generally a music for piano that has been written as a whole can be performed by an orchestra and represents a mixture of classical influences and marching bands. Try listening to music from Scott Joplin to taste ragtime.

Dixieland is a style that can be regarded as a variant of jazz classics and jazz of New Orleans. The original roots of dixieland as a musical form sourced from the Chicago music scene in the 1920s. Pioneers of dixieland style include guitarist Eddie Condon, saxophonist Bud Freeman, and Jimmy McPartland’s trumpeter.

Dixieland style involves a collective improvisation in the first chorus, with the musicians entering solo together riffing of an inflatable instrument, followed by a closing ensemble, usually a drummer playing a 4-bar tag ending by the entire band. Unlike other jazz styles, the set of songs for dixieland musicians is somewhat limited, but offers endless variations in sound models, developed around the 1910s.

Along with the development of ragtime, New Orleans jazz appeared in the jazz scene for the first two decades of the 20th century. Considered the first jazz style, from 1895 to Buddy Bolden, Kid Ory and Jelly Roll Morton in Storyville, New Orleans, to Approaching 1917. New Orleans jazz has become unfit for marching brass bands. There was the first New Orleans jazz documentation from The Original Dixieland Jass Band in 1917 to the 1920s, when the recording technology had evolved.

The subsequent development of the 1980s was influenced by NWOBHM that mixed heavy metal music with pop that produced a sub genre called glam metal. Why is pop music so successful?

Music is one of the entertainment media in the form of strains of tones arranged into a unified musical union. Some of the world’s most famous music such as hip hop, reage, jazz, indie, R & B, pop music and much more. Each type of music has its own uniqueness in terms of elements of music that make it. One type of music that is still popular and popular to date is pop music. Who does not like pop music? This music became the most popular type of music that has been heard so far and has many fans ranging from children to the elderly. The history of pop music dates back to World War I and began to be popular in 1920 by the people of the United States. This type of music comes from the word ‘popular’ in English which means popular, so it is not wrong if this music is so popular even more popular than the type of music that came before.

Why:

Pop music is so popular and even more musicians who focus on working on this type of music considering a lot of people who love it. One of the causes of pop music is addictive to its fans because pop music takes the best part of music and solidifies it into a song. Actually there is a cause that can be proved based on research on the success of pop music in the world, the elements of music contained in pop music.

Elements of Music in Pop Music

1. Chord Progression

Progressions Chord or oblique keys are chord sequences that make sounds into harmony. In this context, it leads to the base of the song in contrast to the melody that can be heard to the surface. Anyone who has ever played a guitar or singing must have known some chord progressions that are so often found on many pop songs.

It can be translated, all the tones follow the previous tone in harmony so it is easy to use as a riff. The notion of the riff itself is a short and repetitive guitar phrase. Most pop music uses a major key because it is generally more vibrant and brings a happy atmosphere to produce a song that is nice to hear. Pop music also often uses this chord because they are very familiar and easy to hear. It was also found that transitions and key changes are rare in pop music.
2. Tempo

Tempo is the measure of the speed of a song that determines the energy of a music. Shaun Ellis & Tom Engelhardt studied the tempo of pop music for 50 years and they found several facts in pop music, including:

In pop music there is not much change. The average pop song revolves around 120 BPM tempo from the 1960s. Why is it about 120 BPM tempo? As already explained, tempo essentially determines the speed and proximity of the song to be a friend of dancing and a composition of a song that is nice to hear. A healthy human heartbeat has a tempo of 60-100 BPM while active but does not perform heavy activities. Heart rate can rise to 120 BPM when the heartbeat feel comfortable but energetic while dancing. Songs also more often have double taps than three taps or “waltz”. The only memorable pop music that has the knock of “waltz” is a song from Norah Jones “Come away with me”.

3. Melody and Harmony

Pop music also focuses on the main melody and provides a little counterpoint. Counterpoints are two or more sequences of adjacent series of melodies. Harmony and counterpoint makes a song rich and beautiful. However, it is different from most pop music where it becomes not easily heard. Focusing on the main melody and hooks in a song makes it more interesting.

Think about when you’re singing a pop song during a karoke, usually there’s only one voice to notice. Unlike when singing a music that has some sound and the sound is moving on its own. In music, counterpoints make rich sound and add to the level of difficulty. However, it is not common in pop music where it can make a slightly less interesting version of one music and reduce focus on the main vocal.
